of confidence on the part of investors in foreign governments? i mean, even three years ago barack obama expressed concern about the long term debt and the confidence of people in the u.s. government. take a listen. >> there may be some tax provisions that can encourage businesses to hire sooner rather than sitting on the sidelines. so we're taking a look at those. i think it is important, though, to recognize that if we keep on adding to the debt, even in the midst of this recovery, that at some point, people could lose confidence in the us economy in a way that could actually lead to a double-dip recession. >> i remember that well. and at the time it was going on, i do occasionally find myself in meetings with very serious people myself. i guess i am personally one now and then. there was this widespread view among people, and not all of it venal, not all of it self-interested, that somehow things were hanging by a thread. that any day now we could have a run on u.s. government debt, which was wrong. but, okay, i can see how people could for a while have believed that. but a lot of tim

president obama, my name is julia. i'm an 11-year-old who lives here in d.c. there are no words to explain how sad i am about the school shooting. even though i'm not scared for my safety, i'm scared for others. i have four brothers and sisters and i know i would not be able to bear the thought of losing any of them. i may not be that into politics, but my opinion is it should be very hard for people to buy guns. the only thing they do is harm or kill and guns should only be in the most horrible event, where others will get hurt if they are not. i know that laws have to be passed by congress, but i beg you to try very hard to make guns not allowed, not just for me, but the whole united states. my love and regrets, julia. >> that's a very thoughtful letter, julia. why did you decide to sit down and write it? >> well, i was overwhelmed with sadness about the school shooting and knew as one person i couldn't do anything, but i knew that president obama could. so i decided to write this letter hoping that at least he would read it and think of doing something. >> theo, you're the dad. did you

the obama administration there's actually been great leaps forward in terms of transactional use of the internet. people file their taxes online. this goes off year after year with relatively to problems. you know -- no problems. you know, this has actually been, those two things have been good advantages. i think the major failing over the last 20 years, and it really goes even back beyond that, is that because we were in a sort of anti-government mode for much of that time and we had at least until the last election a very ascendant conservative feeling in the country, we started to do government not through government. and i think what my two colleagues here are reflecting is that we began to implement policy through regulation and through the tax system. as opposed to taking on policy head on. so your example, phil, about the congo, okay? look, clearly that place is a mess. clearly -- >> uh-huh. no argument. [laughter] >> every good intention people in the congress wanted to make a stance. but doing it that way? as opposed through a more direct, straight-on, diplomatic endeav
